This book is the result of forty years of collaboration between the University Foundation for Development Cooperation (USOS) at the University of Antwerp and its partner institutes in the Global South. The book seeks to formulate some answers to the devastating effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, extractivism, social exclusion and growing inequalities by highlighting the lives, practices and struggles of local and indigenous communities, and from disciplines as varied as design sciences, medical sciences, law, biology, economics and development studies. The academic partners are also deeply engaged in community-based efforts to care for natural resources, safeguard traditional livelihoods, support and empower marginalised groups and prevent adverse impacts such as pollution and forced displacement. These can inspire us to put sustainability, justice and solidarity first.
